Part 1 post about the 21-Day Sugar Detox (21-DSD) exemplified the fun products that made this program interesting. This Part 2 post is a rather challenging topic – cooking and meal prep. Cooking of course is fun, however planning ahead of time and meal prep can be an arduous task.
If you’re preparing for a round of the 21-DSD, Whole30 or any such program for the first time, I highly suggest doing it with a friend or partner. Its always a plus to have someone around to share ideas, recipes and frustrating moments (only initially). I did this all by myself but I had some experience after the Whole30’s.
Major sugar cravings, grueling headaches, irritability is what I anticipated during the first few days of the 21-day sugar detox, to my surprise none of what I describe really happened. After completing couple of Whole30‘s I wanted to change things up a bit…why would I do that to myself is a question I’m very often asked, so here are some reasons why:
- When cravings turn into habits its time to make some changes – I was getting into the habit of eating a piece of dark chocolate after lunch or dinner which is not terrible as such but it was more a case of habitual eating versus mindful eating.
- It’s always interesting to observe how my body behaves in different scenarios, physically and mentally
- Strengthens the willpower muscle
- Opens up an array of foods, aromatic herbs and spices to explore in the kitchen
- Helps hone my creative skills when it comes to cooking as well as meal prep

Its been a while since I wrote in this space, the holidays were busy especially with my mother visiting. We cooked together a lot and I learnt some great recipes which made it even more special. It was time to get back in to the swing of things, plan meals and a workout schedule around work…the usual beginning of the year things. I did my first Whole30 in January 2015 and it was about time for another one in 2016. Even though I eat paleo for the most part the first Whole30 was tough. No form of sugar like honey, agave or maple syrup was a big deal for me. The first couple of weeks were difficult but around week 3 I felt great. I could crossfit six consecutive days without feeling fatigued. As a result of that one month of eating clean, I didn’t have sugar cravings until almost the end of the year. I feel like my sugar cravings have been kind of out of control since around thanksgiving time, the holiday season didn’t help either.
Happy Thanksgiving! (my most favorite holiday of the year). This year I realized its time to make expressing gratitude a habit rather than just wait for today. Not only does it keep you grounded but is proven to promote positivity and happiness.

This is possibly one of the most difficult posts to write after a few weeks of no action on the blog. I didn’t want to feel pressured to write just because it’s something that has to be done and compromise on quality of the content. I want blogging to continue to be a very fulfilling experience, so the mini break really helped to step back and contemplate.
Often when I get overwhelmed with all the information out there on diet, fitness and overall well being, I reflect and think about what is it that really makes sense for my body. We came to this world with a body and mind, the mind truly rules the body. This holds true for everyone but every body is unique and needs to be looked after differently. I can just talk about what worked or is working for me but that doesn’t necessarily mean its the same for all. The best way I think is to observe, listen and love your body.
I write this post while sitting in a train headed to Washington DC. To me there’s no better place to retrospect, think, create and write than sitting in a train. I have always had this thing for trains, be it the crowded local trains in Mumbai or the very peaceful Amtrak here in the States.
Local trains in Mumbai were an imperative part of my daily commute to college and back. They were crowded, noisy, hot and not necessarily clean. Nevertheless I enjoyed the experience, observing people of different age groups, eavesdropping and listening to their conversations. Couple of hours everyday in the train helped in understanding behavioral patterns of people, issues they faced, how they made ends meet and taught me so much about life in general. I believe it played a major role in making me a grounded person.
